Nahla awoke with a violent gasp.

Air rushed painfully into her lungs, as though she had been trapped beneath deep water for far too long. Every breath burned her chest. Her heartbeat pounded so loudly that, for several moments, it drowned out every other sound.

Cold stone pressed against her back.

The scent of damp earth filled the air.

Slowly, she opened her eyes.

Above her stretched a familiar night sky, scattered with stars she had not seen in what felt like another lifetime. The moon hung quietly overhead, bathing everything in pale silver light.

She blinked.

Once.

Twice.

Then reality settled over her like ice.

The palace was gone.

No towering walls.

No crimson banners dancing in the wind.

No guards.

No lantern-lit gardens.

Only silence.

She pushed herself upright with trembling arms.

Around her stood the ancient ruins where everything had begun.

Broken archways reached toward the sky like forgotten hands. Ivy clung to shattered stone. Moss covered cracked walls that had once echoed with the footsteps of kings.

The fort had returned to being nothing more than history.

Yet to Nahla...

It would never again be just ruins.

Her shaking fingers brushed the weathered stone beside her.

The same stone she had touched before the world changed.

Only now it felt unbearably empty.

"No..."

The word escaped as a whisper.

"No..."

She stood unsteadily and stumbled through the abandoned courtyard.

Every step felt desperate.

Every broken wall mocked her.

This had once been alive.

She had seen it.

She had lived inside it.

She had laughed beneath those towers.

She had walked through those gardens.

She had spoken with the king who ruled this forgotten kingdom.

Now...

Only silence answered.

She reached the place where the throne hall should have stood.

Nothing remained except fallen columns and scattered rocks.

She dropped to her knees.

Her fingers dug into the damp earth.

As though she could hold on to a world already stolen from her.

Tears blurred her vision.

"I wasn't ready..."

she whispered.

"I wasn't ready to leave."

The wind answered gently.

Carrying only the rustle of ancient grass.

She closed her eyes.

Immediately...

She saw him.

Storm-gray eyes.

Dark hair moving with the wind.

A quiet voice that carried both command and kindness.

She remembered the warmth of his hand refusing to let go.

His final words.

"As if forgetting was ever possible."

A sob escaped before she could stop it.

She covered her face with both hands.

For the first time since returning...

She allowed herself to cry.

Not because she had survived.

Because she had left someone behind.

Someone she could never explain.

Someone history had already forgotten.

But she never would.

Far across the river of time...

King Zain remained exactly where she had disappeared.

The storm had ended.

Rain no longer fell.

The wind had grown still.

Yet the king had not moved.

Rose petals covered the stone path around him.

The moonlight cast long shadows across the empty garden.

His soldiers watched from a respectful distance.

No one dared approach.

No one had ever seen their king so still.

So silent.

He looked not like a ruler.

But like a man who had lost half of his soul.

His right hand remained tightly closed.

So tightly that blood had begun to stain his palm where his nails pressed into his skin.

Only when dawn touched the horizon did his fingers finally loosen.

Resting in his hand...

Lay a small square of blue silk.

Its edges fluttered gently in the morning breeze.

Upon it...

An embroidered blue rose.

Beautiful.

Impossible.

Unlike any flower his kingdom had ever known.

His thumb brushed gently across the stitching.

The memory of her laughter echoed inside his mind.

"Dreams are often where truth begins."

His eyes closed.

For the first time in many years...

The king prayed.

Not for victory.

Not for power.

Not even for peace.

Only...

"For her to be safe."

Life inside the palace continued.

War refused to wait for broken hearts.

Messengers arrived before sunrise.

Generals gathered inside the council chamber.

Reports of enemy movement covered the great table.

Yet something had changed.

The court noticed it immediately.

Their king still carried himself with strength.

Still made difficult decisions.

Still protected his people.

But the coldness that had once surrounded him had begun to soften.

He listened longer before judging.

He walked among the gardens each evening.

Sometimes...

He even stopped to watch the flowers.

Exactly as she used to.

The elderly head gardener noticed.

"Your Majesty..."

he said one evening,

"The roses bloom better this season."

Zain looked toward the blossoms.

"I know."

He smiled.

Only slightly.

Barely enough to notice.

But it was there.

The gardener stared in astonishment.

Because no one could remember the last time their king had smiled.

The search began quietly.

Zain ordered every scholar in the kingdom to study forgotten legends.

Ancient scrolls were carried from dusty libraries.

Old herbalists were invited to the palace.

Travelers from distant kingdoms brought stories of unusual flowers.

Every visitor received the same question.

"Have you ever seen a blue rose?"

Most laughed nervously.

"Such a flower cannot exist."

Others shook their heads.

"It belongs only to stories."

One elderly woman smiled gently.

"Some flowers bloom only when fate allows them."

The words remained with him.

Days became weeks.

Weeks slowly became months.

Yet every evening...

King Zain visited the garden.

Sometimes he spoke aloud.

Though no one stood beside him.

"I won today's battle."

"The western villages are safe."

"The lavender finally bloomed."

"I almost smiled today."

He paused.

Looking toward the place where she had vanished.

"I think you would have laughed."

The wind carried his words into the roses.

Centuries later...

Nahla found herself unable to stay away.

She returned to the ruins almost every afternoon.

Her professors believed she had become obsessed with medieval architecture.

Her friends thought she simply loved old places.

No one knew the truth.

She wasn't studying history.

She was grieving it.

She carried the same notebook everywhere.

The pages that once held botanical sketches slowly filled with memories.

Quotes he had spoken.

Drawings of the palace.

Storm-gray eyes.

A blue rose embroidered carefully in the corner of nearly every page.

Sometimes she simply sat in silence.

Listening.

As though the stones might remember him too.

One evening, the sky burned orange as the sun disappeared behind distant hills.

Golden light spilled across the ruins.

Nahla wandered toward the old archway where her journey had first begun.

Then...

She stopped.

Something caught her eye.

A tiny green shoot had pushed through a crack between the ancient stones.

She knelt slowly.

A small rose bush.

She frowned.

There had never been one here before.

Its branches were young.

Delicate.

Alive.

She reached toward it carefully.

Nestled among the leaves...

A single unopened bud.

White.

Soft.

Fragile.

Yet...

Near its center...

A faint shimmer glowed beneath the petals.

Not silver.

Not violet.

Blue.

So pale it almost disappeared beneath the fading sunlight.

Her breath caught.

Her hands trembled.

A tear rolled quietly down her cheek.

"No..."

she whispered.

"It can't be..."

The breeze stirred gently.

The tiny bud swayed.

Almost...

As though answering her.

She touched one trembling petal with the tip of her finger.

Warm.

Just as the carved stone had been.

Her heart pounded wildly.

"Zain..."

His name escaped like a prayer.

Across centuries...

Across impossible distances...

She felt, somehow...

He was searching too.

Perhaps standing in another garden beneath another sky.

Looking at another rose.

Wondering if she still remembered.

She smiled through tears.

"I never stopped."

The little bud shimmered once beneath the evening light.

Tiny.

Fragile.

Impossible.

Yet undeniably real.

The first blue rose had not bloomed.

Not yet.

But hope had.

And somewhere beyond the reach of time...

Fate quietly smiled.

Because some promises were never broken.

They simply waited for the right season to bloom.
