Knowing her name felt like holding a secret treasure. The rest of second grade passed in a blur of gradual adjustments. I quickly made friends, found my footing, and let my naturally energetic self come out. I did well in my classes, mostly thanks to my mother, who patiently sat with me every evening to guide me through my lessons.

While I was settling in and filling my days with noise and laughter, my memories of that entire year are still hazy. The only moments that remain vivid, the only details etched permanently into my mind, are the ones that revolve around her.

When third grade finally rolled around, the classroom dynamic shifted. A few students moved away, and new faces took their place. While some of my classmates sulked over the loss of their friends, I felt a singular, overwhelming wave of relief: she had stayed.

I can still picture exactly how Avantika looked that year. She always came to school with her hair tied in neat, twin braids, her uniform impeccably crisp. And then there was that smile—the same bright, effortless smile that had rescued me on my first day. I didn't know what to call that feeling back then, that strange, magnetic pull, but no matter how lively or loud I was with everyone else, the moment I saw her, my eyes would lock on, and the rest of the world just went silent.

Months drifted by in this rhythm. And then, on one ordinary afternoon, the invisible wall between us finally broke.

Our math teacher assigned me to walk down the aisles and collect everyone’s homework notebooks. I moved briskly from desk to desk, cracking jokes and picking up books, until I reached her row. The moment I stood before her, all my usual energy evaporated. My heart began to hammer a frantic rhythm against my ribs.

I waited for her to hand over her notebook, but instead, she looked up, pure panic written all over her face.

"Help me," she whispered, her voice tight with panic. "I left my book at home. If ma'am finds out, she's going to kill me."

Seeing her desperation, any hesitation I had instantly vanished.

"Don't worry," I whispered back, acting on pure instinct. "I'll handle it."

I deliberately skipped her name when handing the stack to the teacher. The next morning, before class began, I covertly slipped her notebook into the pile on the desk.

Later that day, Avantika came up to me, a huge wave of relief washing over her face.

"Thank you so much," she said, her eyes wide. "If you hadn't saved me, she never would have believed that I actually did it."

She was thrilled, but her relief paled in comparison to the soaring feeling exploding in my chest. For more than a year, I had only admired her from afar. But now, I had protected her—and finally, I had spoken to Avantika.
